Academy
Welcome to The Academy at Under The Umbrella Tree! The Academy offers highly structured special education classrooms for children with various exceptionalities. The Academy welcomes students who require an intensive learning environment to enhance their social and academic skills.
Finding an appropriate classroom for students who require a differentiated learning environment can be challenging for many families. There are very few options in the community for students who are not quite ready to go into a large classroom of 10 or more students. Students at The Academy have the opportunity to learn with a 1:3 teacher to student ratio, with no more than 8 student in each class. Each class is taught by an Ontario Certified Teacher (OCT) and supported by Board Certified Behaviour Analysts (BCBA). Students at The Academy get to experience hands on learning with the expertise from specialist teachers and regularly scheduled field trips.v
EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
At The Academy we believe that every student has the potential to learn. Our teaching team strives to maximize every student’s learning potential by systematically breaking down skills across the curriculum, and providing positive reinforcement every step of the way. Little steps lead to big accomplishments, and those we celebrate daily!
CURRICULUM
Teachers at The Academy follow the Ontario Ministry of Education’s curriculum with focus on the following core subjects:
- Math
- Language Arts
- Social Studies
- Science
- The Arts
- Physical Education & Health
To complement the Ministry’s curriculum, The Academy implements it’s own curriculum programs that focus on classroom independence and readiness skills. As core subjects are taught, students learn how to be productive and independent individuals within the classroom dynamic. A variety of assessment tools are used by the teaching team to make sure all the students are on the right track to meeting their learning goals.
All students have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) created by the teacher. The IEP will outline learning objectives and accommodations/modifications made to meet the needs of the learner’s. The IEP focuses on both the learner’s strengths and weaknesses to ensure successful learning.
The Academy operates Monday to Friday. Classes start at 8:45am followed by dismissal at 3:30pm. The school year starts in September and breaks for summer holidays at the end June.
